Description:

Kindergarten students practice writing in some form or other almost from the very beginning of school. We start with daily journals for familiarize children to the writing process.  We start with simple drawings then move toward adding labels and or descriptions.  Eventually children work up to sentences as they are ready. Below are the standards that your child will be expected to be working on.

  • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell the reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book.
  • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory text in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
  • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.
  • Develop clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to the task, purpose and audience.
  • Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting or trying a new approach.
  • With guidance and support, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and/or publish writing.
  • Participate in shared research and writing projects.
  • With Guidance, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer questions.
  • Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
  • Write routinely over extended time periods.

    After Christmas, children will be writing their first and last name on their papers.  Please practice this at home to help them become more fluent writers.smiley
