This class will focus on a broad variety of topics ranging from Physical Science, Earth/Space Science and Environmental Science. The Physical Science portion will include structure and transformation of matter, and Newton’s Laws. Earth/Space Science will include space systems, history of Earth, Earth’s systems, and weather/climate. The Environmental Science concepts will encompass matter and energy in organisms in ecosystems and interdependent relationships in ecosystems. The purpose of this course will focus on preparing students for 7th grade science.
Students are required to have a separate composition notebook and a three ring binder for this class. Notes are to be kept separate from notes in other classes.
Text & Other Resources
A textbook will not be issued for this course. I will provide students the resource needed to be successful in this course.
Students may be encouraged to help each other with assignments or homework. However, copying or cheating is not accepted. Students will not be allowed to communicate during tests, unless otherwise directed. Should academic honesty be a problem, students will be forced to completely repeat the assignment completely on their own under the close supervision of the teacher.
Methods of Instruction
A variety of instructional methods will be used in this course. The modes of instruction in this course will include: lecture/discussion, small group assignments/labs, library/Internet researches, debates, and student/group presentations. Technologies that may be used include: PowerPoint, video/DVD, Internet, overhead projections, etc. Assessments that may be used include: group presentations, exams, bell ringers, writings, Open Ended Responses, worksheets, and announced/unannounced quizzes.
I will use standards based grading for this class. Tests on learning targets will be given every 2-3 weeks depending on the length of the unit. Students can earn a grade of 1 (Basic), 2 (Developing), 2.5 (Almost to Mastery) or 3 (Mastery) of the content. Multiple opportunities will be given for students to redo and makeup work so that they can reach mastery of all content. I encourage every student to re-take to achieve Mastery on all the learning targets. Please refer to the standards based grading policy in the student hand book and the 6th grade standards based grading policy.
