Appalachian Day Event Held at BCMS

On Friday, March 13 the Bath County Middle School Social Studies Department hosted an Appalachian Day event. This was a daylong event that brought in speakers and presenters to talk on different topics about Appalachian culture, art, and history. The idea was to better connect students to our local history and culture and for them to take pride in being Appalachian.

Cecil Lawson and Tom Byron came in and talked to students about Bath County history.

Bob and Lori Fore presented what a day may have been like for early settlers to this region.

Karly Milner brought in a banjo and a dulcimer to play and sing traditional Appalachian music.

Landon Dickerson presented a variety of Appalachian art and homemade musical instruments. He allowed students to get a hands-on lesson in art and music with an impromptu “jam session” using a variety of homemade instruments.

The Kentucky Folk Art Center loaned us some art and presentation boards to display.

Samples of cream candy, handmade right here in Bath County by Mike and Kelsie Jackson of KC Candy, were given to every student.

This event was a huge success as many smiles were seen from young and old alike.

We would like extend a very heartfelt thanks to all of our guest speakers and presenters for coming in.
