  • What is the thinking behind this
  • More transitions
  • Stress on the students
  • Concerned about student achievement
  • Will take time for children to adapt to new school culture
  • Research shows that more transitions reduces test scores
  • Families could have students going to 4 schools
  • Parental involvement increases student achievement
  • Student, teacher, and family has huge impact on student success
  • Stability with children where they are already going to school
  • Hard for a 3rd grade student to change school at this point in their education
  • Kids enter school together and would stay together throughout their education - P-12
  • Who can address the questions and concerns about the configuration
  • Would this involve more bus time
  • Would this involve switching buses
  • This would put a kid on the bus for 30 minutes or longer each day
  • Is there any way we can get more information
  • Who suggested this
  • I think the board members should have been here
  • I want someone to give me answers – would this change be a negative effect or positive effect for our district
  • How long would this take from inception – what is the target date
  • Are they making a decision at the next board meeting
  • Who brought the proposition up in the first place
  • They should have all the data on file because we have been through this once
  • I have done research in the past 3 days  where they only saw improvement in a larger district
  • Have you asked the kids -  they are the ones that will see the impact
  • Is this decision going to be made regardless of how we feel, how the children feel, and any of our input
  • How much of a factor will our concerns be considered
  • I am a volunteer, a grandparent and I have a concern that we do not need to attack you but to take our concerns to the board
  • We need to avoid past problems that have occurred with the board
  • If your data says go with it and the community doesn’t want it – will the board go ahead with this
  • I have 3 children and I will have kids in 3 schools, I went to court to be able to take my kids to CES because of some personal drama
  • I have 2 grandchildren and I take them to school every day, I will have to split them up. They will have to learn different friends
  • Economic concerns – more cost for gas
  • Will the board have their data to present at the board meeting
  • What are we here for
  • All you have to do is to have a show of hands of who is for this and who is against
  • Board members should be here listening to the parents – that is what they were put in for
  • We were under the assumptions that they were going to do what is best for all children not what is best for them as board members
  • Salt Lick and Bethel have already lost their school once they should not have to lose their school again
  • Two elementary schools promotes competition between the schools
  • I go to 3 schools already but I support this
  • Need P-K open to every child
  • Children have opportunities in smaller schools that they would not have in larger ones
  • Children would have camaraderie
  • My child started school at OES, her allergies started getting worse, she was on antibiotics for several months. Before Christmas break we kept her home, she started getting better once away from school and would get better on the weekends. We tried everything and finally found out that mold was the problem and was recommended that we put her in another school. We transferred her to CES. I have concerns that there are other children with the same problem. It took over 2 months to resolve this for my child. I would consider homebound before I would go back to this.
  • I have a granddaughter at OES and I agree with everything that the first lady said that spoke. It would be drastic to change; I don’t understand the reasoning for this. Children need to be with children of all ages – that is the real world.
  • The highlight of my child’s week was the day that he got to read to a younger child at school
  • The main support shows K-6 and we are going the opposite direction
  • My child looks up to the older children because he wants to be like them and it helps them set goals
  • I have a 4th grader at CES, she has had the opportunity to teach younger kids and she loves it. My child likes going to school with her younger cousins and she would miss this
  • We sent my child to preschool to become familiar with the school and she would lose this
  • In 1988 I was forced to go to a middle school in another county when they combined. This transition was not good and it did not help me when I went to high school. They reconsidered their configuration. Some people switched districts because of the change. It is not economical in most cases, takes teachers away from staff, and students away from the staff that they know. This needs to be looked at before a decision is made. Research says no. It didn’t help, I didn’t learn as much.
  • Better opportunity for sports if you don’t put too many kids in one school. Lost opportunities for kids because they would have to try out to be on a sport team
  • Hard to take a kid away from a teacher they know – they lose the teacher that they think they were going to have next year. Emotional bond lost
  • Why has this come up again
  • Is because of test scores at the high school, middle school, elementary school – why
  • Kids are getting a wonderful background in these elementary schools. They are going to be uprooted again within 4 year. Research shows positive if the schools are large
  • Is it the kids or is it the teachers. Parents sometimes get blamed for things that is not their fault -  it may be the teacher. Sometimes when they look at test scores and they are not good- they want to start mixing things up. It is not always the kids
  • What about children with disabilities – I work with a man that the last transition put his child behind worse than he was
  • Consistency has helped my daughter. Teachers know the families
  • Stability – if it is important in the home it should be important in the school. Kids feel safe where they are
  • We are not saying they would not be safe, but they feel safe where they are now
  • I do a waiver every year for my kids to go to CES. The school knows me and my history. My child is just now getting to where he does not cry when I drop him off
  • Impossible to go to several schools
  • How much will funding be affected
  • How much will transportation be affected
  • How would my child go to CES when I live within the city limits
  • My grandchildren have been taken out of their home so this would be a second disruption from a stable environment
  • Who makes the decision of what will happen
  • No matter what you asked, in the past, when a hot question was asked the board would go into executive session and avoid us
  • Concern about the location of daycare
  • Why was this brought about
  • Would the teachers stay with the current grade
  • I work at OES and I think they should bond together – don’t separate them
  • What did the teachers say or think about this
  • Someone must have seen a pro in order to start this – what was it
  • Were the teachers for or against the configuration
  • Will any of the information about the surveys be shared
  • Once the board makes a decision will the reason be shared for why they decided the way they do
  • At some point could there be an open forum with parents, teachers and board members outside of a board meeting before a decision is made
  • Will we know how each board member votes
